Recently, I switched from sprint to atnt. With sprint, I had unlimited data. With atnt, I have two gigs of data, plus roll over data. Having said this, how can I stay within my data cap, and are there any apps that let you track data usage?
The short answer is absolutely yes.
The slightly longer answer is that how you do it depends upon your phone's operating system.
Under Settings, there's usually something called Cellular and under that, you have options to turn on and off support for various apps on your data plan.
If you write back and say what phone you have, one of us can give you specifics. Or, you can explore your Settings and find the answer yourself and feel proud of yourself for having gone out and found it.
While there are apps that can track this, again, they're just fancy user interfaces for what is already in Settings, where you can see how much data is being used, and by what apps.
Here's a tip: Apps like Facebook, Twitter, any app that uses Foursquare, are large data consumers per app. And I mean from the background, not when you're actually using the app.
You can manage your data at 2 GB / month, many do. And you really don't have to "go without" in any meaningful way to do it. Sure, some things go by the way side, but your smart phone can be just as smart and helpful as it is right now and you can still manage that data. Of course, it goes without saying that especially video content is a real bandwidth / data hog.
On AT and T website you can see how much you have used as well, or by simply calling 611.
I have Verizon, and in the Verizon app, it keeps track for me.
In android's lollipop you can set your device or phone to cut you off at 2 GS.
If you've got an iPhone, you can turn cellular data off for certain apps. When my son was on my bill, I did this for youtube. Also, be aware of any other streaming services like Netflix, Pandora, etc.
I have turned off all of the apps that could end up being data hogs.
all right, that's good. I have an IPhone and have 5g of data. I have verison as
well. or is it page plus? anyways, I turn off cellular data when I'm at home.
